I use putty - it works pretty well (and is a good ssh client too!)
Seems to not have full ansi support when running on win95/98, but
in 2k/xp it works great.

I have had version 0.20d working with dosemu 1.1.99, with the same delay problem as you explained, however, the game actually started for me.
