text slows to a crawl sometimes

Post by haakon »

Does anybody else notice how (atleast on Windows) the games slows to a crawl at times like when two people trade items (by hitting 1 at the main street)? And then just when I entered the editor it slowed everything in the game to a crawl...i've tried file and record locking options but I don't guess they have much to do with this problem, cause they didn't help...upgraded from .20c to .20d just in case, but it didn't help either. I thought I heard something about this somewhere, and if so, has anyone found a solution? does anybody know what I'm talking about?

Yes we have noticed that in Windows XP Pro especially, but haven't figured outr a way to prevent it either. When I've checked CPU usage in XP PRO, it is near to 100% while the text is slow.

I switched from linux to Windows cause everything in the game just took forever -- any times when it had to write something to the hard drive it seemed... even when just doing intimate sessions, when someone would say to go to sleep with someone it would say whatever it said and then pause for like 10 solid seconds before going on to the next intimate session. when you entered the game, the "Hang on..." prompt would sometimes take like 30 seconds to pass... it was just slow as hell! But, it never slowed down due to other people doing stuff. Oh well, I guess it's a trade off. Even with the pauses, it's certainly better than emulating DOS in linux... :D

I was never able to get DOSEMU to work at all with linux, and haven't even booted up Linux for months now.
My newest machine, which runs XP PRO, I am re-building to run the Gameserver/Usurper on a Serial ATA RAID0, that consists of 2 WD 80g drives lashed together. My goal there is to see if HD access is part of the slowness we are all seeing.

I'm running the board on a Seagate Cheetah 10K RPM Ultra160 SCSI hard drive...relatively speaking it's very fast, way faster than what I had... and it's all on an AMD64 3000+ with 512 megs of DDR, etc etc etc ... a very fast system ... and man how it crawls when two people get in there and one of them is stealing beer or going through intimate sessions...

What is the ideal operating system to run in order to have 5 or so nodes playing usurper and not have all the lag?

article (in geekspeek) that made me think about usurper

I came upon http://www.ntcompatible.com/postprint120936.html and it made me think of the slowness with usurper's pauses. Maybe this can help, Jakob.
