I would never want to insult you dear jacob... But your weapon system need a tutch up...
Atleast the names.... make it a bit more seriuce if you get what I meen.
I understand that your time is limited and shouldent be wasted at sutch things. Esepcialy sense you gave us the great editor... so .. here is my offer to you.. Im doing a new weapon system rigth now... Weapons, what they cost, how to find them, what can be carried by who, good names of them, and logical sense of them.. (yes.. I have got some insperation from your already made weapons.)
It migth take some time to finnish this, but if you want to have a look at it, I can post it here on the forum when its finnished... and you can have a look at it. If you dont like it I dont force you to use it or anything, we will anyhow use it. (Unless your planing on updateing that system soon?)
If you liketo talk to me more about this.. Im aswell from Sweden and you can drop me line about it.
Regards
//Eric

When you have finished the weapons file, and if you would like, I can put a copy of it available for download at my website in the subdirectory
http://www.knaper.org/usrp/U which currently contains u.zip and a drinks.zip files.
I haven't placed it there yet, but will if there is a request to, an NPC data file I made with many more NPC's than are normally found could also be placed there. Nothing really fancy, just a lot of them. It also makes the system go really slow during maintenance, especially if NPC relations is enabled.
Let me know if there is any interest in this type of thing.

Sure thing... Im rigthing down the system rigth now..
The Weapon migth lose \"some\" of its powers in the midle-high levels and better armour is coming insteed..
(That will maybe counter the effect that the spells are bad)
As the system looks rigth now... the most powerfull weapon will have about 110+ in attack powers. But the armour will be alot better.
Ofcourse this migth be changed if I find that its not balanced at the high level dungeons.

Balance was one of Jakob's original concerns(back in the 90's) when he first laid out the armor and weapons. Back then is was almost impossible for a character to develop as much strength, hitpoints and other abiliities as we commonly see today in an average player, let alone a good serious student of the game. Some may wonder why, but it is because evrything about the game has reallly evolved. I don't know how far back your experience with the game goes. I have played on open public BBS's almost every version that has been released, except the earliest couple. The first one I open-played is version 0.01f when I was using my
Apple//GS to connect by modem to Hemet Nights BBS in late 1993 or early 1994(version 0.01f was released about Oct 8 1993)

(To all Sysops : follow the instructions in the 'README!' file!)
I recognized a couple of situations where the program
would bomb out. These have been corrected.
* All races can now REALLY resurrect teammates.
* NPC Wizards now casts spells in gang combat.
* 'Fight to death' option added.
* Magical items can be purchased, others can be found. Many of these can be
very useful in battle, others are dangerous.
* Items can now be sent to NPC:s (useful to increase team strength).
* More computer characters have been added (big and tough guys).
* More detailed info on NPC:s.
* Gnolls poison effect is now stronger, depending on which level
the 'biter' is on.
* New players can choose to be males/females. Gender support
also added in text.
* Flee the dungeons now works properly.
* Beg for mercy in the dungeons now works.
* Players can now configure some offline combat behaviour.
* Lockups due to repeated keypressing are now gone.
Many small bugfixes and changes that i can't remember. And of course
some cosmetic enhancements.
AT any rate, it has changed in many ways, and in many others hasn't changed. I was an avid player of Usurper and Legend of Red Dragon back then. Haven't played L.O.R.D in over ten years now. Bought my first IBM-Compatable partly so I could run usurper on my own computer. I first learned programming in 1974-75 and was working as a programmer from 1983 on until I "retired" due to the company downsizing in 1998.
Anyway I digress.. Good luck and let me know if you have questions.
You mentioned you had version 0.20b, do you need version 0.20d for your weapons work. The weapons files should be interchangeable between those two versions as far as I know.
Ninave wrote:Thank you!
I now manage to get it online. I just edited your u.zip
I dont care if its "only" 20b
Yey! Now we can play... *happy happy happy*
Thank you again. I phoned my old friends directly.. they logged in direct.
Thank you again. This was the best news in many mouths.
*happy*

For a little more history here I found this in the What's New file from version 0.07 and is an excerpt....
Jakob in 1994 wrote:
Version 0.07 BETA (1994-08-01)
(+) indicates changes since the 0.06 BETA release
.
.
*All weapons and armors from earlier version have been discarded.
Usurper now supports a "full equipment" system, which means that
players can dress up their characters with different armors and
weapons. They can buy gloves, boots, pants, helmets, belts and much
more to give them better protection/equipment.
(Don't worry about players old weapons/armors! They are cashed in when
the conversion program is executed.)
*To increase the flexibility of Usurper, an Object Editor has been added to
the Editor program. Approximately 500 objects are included as default.
However, sysops are free to create their own, or edit existing, objects
with the Object Editor. Make your own weapons, armors, food, drinks,
magic stones, poisoned potions, cursed instruments or any
other strange items you can think of. You can of course write colorful
descriptions to every Object. Hidden information can also be included.
Objects can be configured to be monster weapons only, or only be available
in the shops, or they may be set to be found in the dungeons at certain
levels. It is also easy to create a "only one of its kind" type of object.
If, for example, a very powerful weapon is created, the Sysop can give it
to an NPC or a player and then toggle the Objects existance in the
shops/dungeons to OFF. Now the rest of the players probably want to have
a little "chat" with the lucky owner to this unique weapon. Players can
also be given special items after acheieving specific goals.
The above are only suggestions on how to make the game more challenging.
The real possibilites are restricted by your imagination alone.
Up to 65,000 different objects can be created and used.
<> Programmers Personal <>
Personally, I must admit that the making of new objects, especially
articles of clothing, has been the most enjoyable part in the making
of Usurper so far. And since the NPC:s do their own shopping, the
joy can be extended when watching how THEY dress. I don't know if
you must have special kind of humour to appreciate the occasion when
Ugluk comes rushing at you, wearing a Sombrero, jeans and ray-bans.
However, the default objects included in this package range from serious
articles to a number of more bizarre items. I like both types.

Some SYSOP's have taken Jakob up on creating and modifing the weapons and armor. Most notably haakon with his BBS at The Vortex -- telnet://vortexbbs.com
He created a lot of different settings and calls it Ultimate Usurper

Ultimate Usurper starts on December 1 on the Vortex. What is Ultimate Usurper, you ask? It's the most modded out game of Usurper on the entire BBS scene. How? A lot of hard work and testing!
This is not just "another" game of Usurper with a few tweaks!
And it's a lot more than just the awesome armors to choose from that (unlike other BBSes whose sysops add custom armors) don't ruin the dungeon fights, and such. They are essential in Ultimate Usurper. A whole new dimension of strategy has been added...go slow, take it easy, and sit on your money? or spend more of it up at first and go to the deeper levels, advance quicker, making more money by not spending it on potions thanks to your armors? which is better? find out!
Guaranteed to be the best, most enjoyable, and most memorable game of Usurper you have ever played. It's challenging but sensible. You have to see it to understand!
***GAME STARTS DECEMBER 1ST @ VORTEXBBS.COM
***YOU WON'T WANT TO MISS OUT! DON'T START LATE!

Sounds great

I look forward to hearing from you here. There may also be some questions you will be able to help with as well sometimes.
I wasn't able to look much at the Ultimate Usurper either, as when he went "live", I was overloaded with other work. I'm gearing up now for my intense work season for the next 3 months, so during those months, my time on the computer will be limited..

I have not yet found time to look more into the weapon system... but that NPC file would be a great addon... I believe there are real to small amount of them rigth now.
Have been playing world of warcraft the latest year. and something that hit me that is good by that game (when you look to weapon)
The name there weapon somewhat after the abilitys of them... like:
Champion Sword of the Monkey
and as it is \"of the monkey\" it give you + on agi
My tougth was to copy that idea from them... so people know something about the weapon they are useing with out checking the stats on it. And Hole set that have a a simmular name are also very popular.. Like
Dragonstalker Set:
-- Dragonstalker Helmet
-- Dragonstalker Boots
-- Dragonstalker Tunic
And so on..
you get the idea Im sure

Sure. When I am doing some of my character testing, I do a similar thing in setting a complete set of weapon/armour that only provides basic protection, and damage to the opponent, that is not race/class biased, so that I can equally equip various test characters that can go into the dungeons at their level, and survive, but not neccessarily overwhelm the opposition..
Also remember that in some cases dungeon monsters are self compensating, in that the tougher your character, the more so they are.
And in the latest versions, NPC tend to level up quite quickly.

A lot of the weapon system don't make sense... like holding two polearms, one in each hand, or a bow and a crossbow. Or a polearm and a bow. Not to mention also two weapons and THEN a shield at the same time. How is that possible? lol! Ok, so this game isn't really based on real life. But it should limit you on how much you can hold. There should be a left hand slot, a right hand slot, a ranged slot, and an instrument or wand slot (as in Dark Age of Cameot or World of Warcraft). Then, if you have a polearm or a real big, 2-handed sword, then you shouldn't be able to equip a weapon in the other hand or a shield. And if you have a one-handed weapon in each hand, you shouldn't be able to hold a shield. And when holding a shield, it should be in the left or the right hand...not to mention some classes can have shield styles they could use, such as bash (chance to stun them for a round). And bows and crossbows, and even each kind of weapons, each class should have the proficiencies for each type of weapon. It's kinda odd seeing a paladin use a staff or a magician using 2 clubs. The same idea can go with armor too - Armors should be separated by types, such as cloth, leather, studded, mail, scale, plate, etc. and each class can wear up to a certain type...maybe even at lower levels they can only wear certain types and at higher levels they can wear new types... for example, a magician...can wear cloth and never anything else. Paladin...should wear mail for first so many levels (til about 40 or 50) then they should get ability to wear plate)... but a magician wearing plate? That goes with his two polearms he wields instead of a staff. Heh.. well, I guess all that would take a major overhaul in the inventory system wouldn't it?

I agree about the use of a double handed sword in each hand, plus a shield.. Yes it would take a complete overhaul of the equipment using system.. Of course, if this is a problem, you can always set it too Classic Mode, one armoour item, one weapon system..

Did't remove from thread, as removal might have damaged thread.
Lenny has to be careful in cutting stuff with his garudas axes in each hand.
Quite heavy as they happen to be. How could a meer mortal swing an axe in each hand,
whilst a holdin a shield and a whole buncha other stuff.
Lenny Can!!!!

...this is why I play the one I do. Classic Mode is sooooo much easier and more fun to play. While... yeah, it seems a lot like LoRD, but still, Usurper > LoRD any day.

I started playin LORD & Usurper about the same time, plus a few others. I was dialing up to a local BBS's, Tidal Wave & Hemet Nights, both of Hemet California, using my trusty old Apple ][-GS WOZ, machine(was making a GOOD livin with it). LORD became boring quickly, Usurper just intrigued me. At that time, Classic Mode was the Only Mode, so there was no probelems with how many weapons I did or diid not have, etcetera.
If it had just been LORD, I probably would have wound up with a MAC

So Sorry MAC-Lovers, Good machines, but not my cup of tea. I always preferred a computer I could tear into without worry of warrenty loss. Partly because of Usurper, I evolved to PC systems, and have personnally built many since.
Anywhoo, was able to find the password for the Close Circle Team(they always had the same password back then)on the WOZ, and was hooked then. Had ta get access to a machine that could actually run it. Still like Classic for play sometimes.

Yeah, I play LORD on GED... it's more fun on there than on another board I use to play on.
Usurper just has a lot more you can do, you can be tons more involved with stuff instead of just going into the forest, killing other players, the Inn, armor and weapon shops then the bank.
LORD = teh borxingzorz !!!11oneoenexclamationpoint
