Abdication Question...

I'm king over at Vortex and after reading the List of Hierarchy, I noticed several players abdicating from the throne the same day they took over the throne.

Why? What is the benefit of doing this?

Thanks!

Aye wont even try ta say thus is the answer fer all, but aye hath don so.
(translatd) Lenny has Usurpered the throne many times in various kingdoms. Sometimes he stays monarch for a long time, other times he Usurps the throne, then abdicates soon afterward. The reason, He often does not care for the sitting monarch, will usurper it, then abdicate, hopeing that someone better will take the vacant throne. We(lenny & I) do not desire to be the Monarch ain games, as we feel you do have to spend time, setting up Quests, adminstering security, setting taxes, exempting taxes from some, etcetera. Other like the POWER of Monarch. It can be done well, but it can also nearly kill a kingdom as well. This can happen, if the monarch is power and gold hungry. Suppressing all the shops usage, except for their few fvored players. In years past, I have seen where a dishonest(read multiple-account-user) will overpower the game and make it so oppressive that everyone else quits playing. In the end those folks wind up playing with themselves.

Having typed all this. Lenny is currently playing in a game, where he has been monarch 3 or four times, usurping the throne each time. All that have tried to usurp him, have failed. Primarily, because, lets face it, Lenny knows a little more about the game than some. Our only request from the former rulers, waa that if they set a tax, to either regugulary send tax refunds, or better yet, exempyt lenny from taxes. (Can't see being the only one in the game with over 1billion gold, paying taxes to the King). We have donated gold to the ruling thrones for their support, excetera. including for the purchase of Lake Monsters. When the former monarchs ignored requests for exemption, we re-Usurped, killing all 17 lake monsters, guards and sleeping monarch. In that game. we may well stay Monarch now untill the cows come home, or someone else shows an interest in being monarch. Currently Lenny is approximately twice as powerful in fighting form to anyone else in the game. If and when that hapens, I'll probably abdicate again, as no one there can even get past the moat, or the guards, nor lenny.

Anyway, that is why we would usurp the throne, and then abdicate within the same day. Tiz truely a show of power,Yes, but not a desire to actually be Monarch. Some others may abdicate because they like to be on a team, which they cannot do, if they remain monarch.

Very Interesting...

I'm not the power hungry type in the game...but am the most powerful (I think :D ).

I've got taxes, but only on the player's who take advantage of the newbies. I take the tax money and give it to the newbie's to give them a chance to live a bit longer.

I miss not being on the team or taking the quests, but I don't find being the monarch all that time consuming. I'll probably hold it for awhile longer and then abdicate.

Sad thing is that there are no NPC's in our games...all real people, so to collect the taxes, I have to tax \"somebody\".

Where are you guys playing at? Maybe I'll come join up....

We are currently doing miost of the play at Atlantis BBS in Stockholm telnet://leveller.mine.nu We also occasionally play several other sites including Vortex. Most of the sites listed on my telnet page http://www.knaper.com/usrp/telnet-links.html are places where I also have a character, either Lenny or læhynê de ræpân

At Atlantis, there are currently only 3 other active players, but there are several others that haven't been there in a while also. Only real downside there is the SYSOP only has one node. He has a number of other doors as well, but I don't think they are played much. I currently have a high tax rate there, but will exempt new players as quickly as possible.

Atlantis does have NPC's in the standard "NEW" mode. All the NPC's are level 100 now. 25 dungeon fights a day. Only item taken in a fight is your head gear and in hand gold. All items are standard, unlike Vortex.

Give Lenny a shout, if you come by there.
