About Being a Deity/Immortal...

Hi all -
I am a longtime Usurper fan, currently very sadly playing only locally... I have a question. I had this terrible habit of always being afraid to take the leap to immortality, and wonder what exactly you can do as a god in this game. When you do log in as an immortal, what exactly happens? What all can you do?
