SOLUTION FOR SLOW MULTINODE USURPER / 100% CPU USAGE

IF YOU RUN A MULTINODE BBS AND OFTEN HAVE MUTLIPLE USERS PLAYING USURPER AT THE SAME TIME AND COMPLAIN ABOUT HOW SLOW IT GOES MOST THE TIME YOU SHOULD SERIOUSLY READ THIS

The Vortex right now is running off of my home DSL, the extreme edition, best there is, but it still only gets me 300k down and like 50k up... the 300k is fine, but only having 50k up really restricts the board... so as a result I can only really have about 6 nodes, or atleast that's all I'm trying right now. I really could have more, often people call in the middle of the day and can't get in cause all six are in use.

Of course, they are all in use by people playing Usurper.

But even when half of them are in use by Usurper players usually the game (and the BBS, and anybody playing anything else like LORD) nearly grinds to a halt when people get in and go through their mail, steal beer barrels, go intimate sessions, etc etc etc...so imagine when you have 6 people on, for the most part, you are watching a screen slooowwwly being displayed in front of you. Sucks for everybody, and your whole computer grinds to a halt basically cause the processor runs at 100% when it does any of its \"delays\" like the delays after \"glug...\" when drinking a drink from the bar...

but wait

I have found a program called TameDOS (http://www.tamedos.com) that monitors DOS apps and keeps them from running amok. So far I've done pretty well just using the basic settings, but am testing alternate configurations. If I find a *great* one I'll post the file here..but for now the default is still a *good* one.

There appears to be significant speed improvement across the board, I think it was most noticeable with beer stealing and intimate sessions. I haven't had it running long, but I think that it has made a dramatic improvement to the operation of my board. Before it was really sucky, but now I think it's actually pretty good.

I recommend this download hugely...

Registration is only $20 (USD). This is a small price to pay to fix the headache created by these multiple usurpers. And, you can even specify custom settings for custom dos progrms... ie, save settings as usurper.exe.tam and do custom usurper settings and lord.exe.tam would be custom for when you run lord.exe ... not like lord needs TameDOS, but ...

If this helps you...which it should...stop by the Vortex and let me know or don't, whatever. Anyway, hope it helps!!!

I was having a similar problem at the Mushroom Cloud BBS, so I decided to take your advice and give TameDOS a shot. Although it did help with some things, it made a number of ANSI screens in 0.20d load terribly slow remotely (local ran fine) and made earlier versions (0.1f is still my favorite) unplayable. It also had no affect whatsoever on daily maintenance which is really my only gripe with the new versions of Usurper.

Have you found any custom settings that help out? I may try e-mailing their tech support. With the TameDOS default settings it runs fine locally. However, if I try to play via telnet it is terrible. I use Synchronet on top of Windows Server 2003.
