I noticed that my BBS, Masquerade, was listed as carrying the classic version of Usurper 0.20e. Can someone tell me what the difference is between classic and new?
Thanks!

I am certain I will miss something here, so if others have comments, please ad them.blakdeth wrote:I noticed that my BBS, Masquerade, was listed as carrying the classic version of Usurper 0.20e. Can someone tell me what the difference is between classic and new?

When Usurper was first written and played, all characters could carry and use a single item of armor and a single weapon.
Then in February 1995 version 0.06 introduced the "NEW" mode.
Here is the description Jacob included in the Whats-New:
Other areas that can only be used in the NEW mode, are the players market, giving of items to other players, or Team Members, etc. Also in New mode there are many items to be found in the dungeons.Jacob wrote: * Usurper can now be run in either OLD or NEW mode.
the 'OLD' mode is similar to the older versions of Usurper.
the 'OLD' mode gives the player one weapon and one armor.
the 'NEW' mode gives the player many different kinds of armors (leg,
body, feet, shields...etc etc).
The 'OLD' mode has the same weapon and armor as the older versions of
Usurper. It is also faster and simpler to play.
This switch can be toggled in the middle of a game. But it's not
recommended.
Setting up version 0.20e, Configuration option #91 sets NEW or CLASSIC. options 53 thru 66, and 101 through 115 control various armor and weapon settings.
As a player, I play both New and Classic. I personally prefer the NEW mode.

Thanks! I think I'll switch my setup to new and see how it goes. Do you have to reset the game to do this?

In theory you can switch without a reset.blakdeth wrote:Thanks! I think I'll switch my setup to new and see how it goes. Do you have to reset the game to do this?
However I have found it is generally a better idea to reset everything, especially as in your case where there are but a few existing players.
I'll try to stop by Masquerade BBS each day for the next week or so, in case you have questions i should have answers.

Re: New vs. Classic
I think I am going to leave the game at classic for now. I've got a few players I don't want to scare off.
Armor in new version
Aside from rarely finding armor in the dungeon, once the best armors have been purchased at the armor shop is there any other way to get better armor? I've had the best armors that can be bought at the store for a while now, and found one heavy breast plate in the dungeons, but the higher in level I get the less effective my armor seems to become in absorbing damage. Any suggestions?
