.20d game not advancing date

Post by mantazz »

Hello
I have been playing on a usurper .20d game for a while now, and when I logged on today (jan 22nd), I noticed that the game has not advanced its date for the past couple days. When I read today's news, it says \"Happenings of 01-20-2006\".
The BBS seems to have the correct time, AFAIK.
I did notice there was a frozen character - stuck in lizards steroids - could this be related to the problem?

And of course more importantly, how do we solve this problem? The game was previously correct with time...

I suspect yur stuck character is preventing daily maintenance. You will first need to delete NODE\\onliners.dat before running maint to clear it up. I ran a test of one of my setups a moment ago to make sure 1-22-2006 wasn't some magic limited date for usurper. My fmaint went just fine.

I contacted the sysop, he corrected this problem. I assume he did what you suggested or something similar, but I don't know for sure.
I also tried logging into that one and imprisoning the offending character (as I happen to be king in that game). I was unable to do that. I find it interesting that some king functions (angels / demons, tax status, especially) can be done to characters while they are logged on, but a character cannot be imprisoned while logged in.

glad to hear the SYSOP was able to get the date squared away. Just out of curioscity, what BBS/telnet site do you play at?

The difugility between the functions the monarch can do, is a strange one indeed. I do have a theory on why that one, though it may be totally wrong. Prior to actually having Monarchs and monarch powers, I believe the players location was not re-written to the user file until they left the game, thus retreiving that information from the onliners.dat file. If for some reason, they were physically removed by deletion of onliners.dat, they by default were sleeping in the dorm, NOT the Inn. Of course as I am typing this, I am trying to remember at which version, monarchs could jail anyone. I'll have to fire up the old 386 Win 3.11 to figure this one out. OK, Monarch functions were first added in Version 0.16 released (1996-07-20)

Anyway, that may have something to do with it, and then maybe not. But you are correct(as I recall from when I was last testing MONARC functionality), that is a difugality.

I've been playing .20d on x-bit.org. The sysop has been pretty good at kickstarting this whenevr this happens (just happened again today). I think it's related to him having set the \"penalty for dropped carrier\" to ON. It just seems that the dropped carrier connections are never timed out locally when the day ends!

The file that causes that problem is onliners.dat that is left in the NODE folder of usurper. Some SYSOP's are able to delete that file(if it exists) just prior to running the daily maintenance. Having said that however, doesn't mean that ALL SYSOP's can do this, it depends upon their operating system and BBS software. I may be wrong, but if memory serves me, X-Bit runs with DOS-emu on a NON Windows system. Nothing wrong about that, in fact I personaly think it's great. :)

You might want to message the SYSOP again regarding the hung player..

I believe the reason why maintenance won't run in that case, is that you don't want to run maintenance while there actually IS a player on, and onliners.dat is that mechanism.
