glad to see he announced this on the 7th, and not six days earlier or I wouldn't have been so sure of it really being the good news that I take it to be!

Will there stil be \"official\" versions of usurper released after the source goes out? Or are you leaving it alone after this Jakob?

Why not release under a BSD license?

Certainly this is more free. Also, I don't need to be a legal expert to understand it! Free of cost with complex legal bindings or just plain free.

The programmers amongst us apreciate it whatever you choose, Thank you!!!

Porting to OS/2!

Post by SLASHER »

This is the greatest news I've heard in a while. Because, I recently took my BBS off a WinXP and moved it over to an OS/2 box. At midnight every night my BBS shuts down for an hour and runs some events, and one of those events is Usurper's daily maintance, so a users never has to wait on it. Good thing too, cause the maintaince takes well over 7 hours on a 530 Mhz Pentium 2, with 192 Meg of RAM, under OS/2 Warp 4.52, with the Memory patch even. That's just crazy. But it's happening. So, open sourcing this mean someone could finally port this game to OS/2. Someone, like me! Whoo Whoo!

Oh dear, licence wars. I think most people would say that both styles of licence have a place. In this case, Jakob has spent who knows how long working on Usurper, and now plans to release it to the community. Under a BSD licence, someone could take Jakob's code, modify it, and sell it, keeping it all to themselves. How is that fair? If you want to profit, write your own game, or provide some kind of premium usurper services (of course, you can still charge people to play GPL Usurper on your server!).

The GPL simply guarantees that anyone modifying Jakob's code, if they are going to distribute it, also provide the source of their modifications.

It's really very simple. If you take it, change it and redistribute it, show us what you did. The details are there to make it legally valid and cover special cases. If I can, I'd be happy to help explain any area you don't understand.

2 years...

If there was something we could do to help this move forward, we would do it...

Until you release the source, there really isn't anything anybody can do.

Life is short, you could die tommarow...

time time

Post by rasputin »

hi,

It has been too long since I posted something about the Usurper source.
The fact is that I have been neglecting it all for other things.

Now its time to make it happen.

This is whats going to happen. I am compiling a 0.20e release which contains some fixes and minor news.. Things I did in 2005 but never got around to release.

With this 0.20e version I will make it a GNU release. The source code will be posted along with the binaries.

regards,
jd

wow. i really hope this happens.

can you give us a timeframe of when this will happen?

if you need some beta testers for your new release before you let it out into the wild, let me know.

this is excellent news.
